Our Vision . . .

is to enhance the social, moral, and spiritual fabric of urban Pasadena through personal relationships and programs that emphasize education, moral development, strengthening the family, racial reconciliation and Christian faith.

We believe that the best way to effect change in a community is by being there, living and working in a neighborhood, developing leaders and offering educational opportunities for children, youth and families.  Through relationships and mentoring, we believe people can grow and mature and live fulfilled and enriched lives.  Our desire is to be a "home" for the people of our neighborhood - a base of love and concern from which they can fulfill the potential with which they were created.

Currently, we serve over 120 children and teens weekly in our programs, which include:

1) CAN-DO Kids Club - (CAN-DO stands for "Christians Assisting Neighbors, Developing Opportunities")  A daily after school tutoring and enrichment program for K-6 that includes academic, music lessons, enrichment classes, reading development, recreation, fieldtrips, snacks, Bible Club and the CAN-DO Kids Club Gospel Choir!  We are currently serving two Pasadena schools - Jefferson and Longfellow.

2) Teen Night - A weekly outreach which includes food, fun, and friends.  Open to Middle and High School Students.

3)  Middle School Tutoring - A daily academic and enrichment program.  Includes fieldtrips and special activities.

4)  Moms Night Out - Evenings of fun and encouragement for the moms of this neighborhood, which include dinner, crafts, sharing and prayer.

5) Neighborhood Leadership Development/Internship Program- We hire recent high-school graduates from the community to work in our CAN-DO Kids Club program, and through mentoring, work to encourage their future education as well as social and spiritual growth.

Steve & Jenni Wiebe, the founders of Neighborhood Urban Family Center, began CAN-DO Kids Club in 1993.  NUFC has been a non-profit corporation since 1998.  From 200-2006, NUFC participated in the statewide CORAL (Communities Organizing Resources to Advance Learning) initiative, sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation.  In 2005, NUFC was the recipient of the prestigious "Others Award," given by the Salvation Army.  In 2006, NUFC moved all of its programs to the CORAL Center, at 2750 E. New York Drive.  NUFC has shown proven increases in academic outcomes, particularly in reading achievement and other social competencies.
